The 16th edition of the Master’U BNP Paribas, the world university tennis event, organized by the FFSU, in partnership with BNP Paribas and the FFT, will take place in Honfleur (Calvados), from 1 to 4 December 2023.
A rich and long history.
Created in 2006, the Master’U BNP Paribas is located in a new host city every two years.
Previous editions were held in Colombes (2006-2007), Poitiers (2008-2009), Rouen (2010-2011), Aix-en-Provence (2012-2013), Rennes (2014-2015), Lille (2016-2017), Grenoble (2018-2019) and Honfleur (2022).
The 2024 and 2025 editions will take place in Reims.
Eight national teams invited.
This 16th edition will bring together the same 8 national university teams as in 2022: Germany, Australia, Belgium, the United States, Great Britain, Ireland, Switzerland and France.
In the past, other Nations have also participated in the Tournament: China, Russia, Mexico or Montenegro.
An original formula.
Since its inception in 2006, the Tournament has relied on a unique mixed team format:
– each team consists of 3 players and 3 players
– each match takes place at the best of 7 matches: 2 ladies singles, 2 men singles, 1 double ladies, 1 double gentlemen and 1 mixed double.
Team USA dominates.
With 10 victories over 15 editions, the «Team USA», winner of the last three editions, is both a scarecrow and a favourite.
But the outsiders are numerous: Great Britain winner in 2017 and finalist last year, Australia third in its first participation in 2022 and of course France, which won three times but whose last victory dates back to 2011, in Rouen.
Germany, Belgium, Ireland and Switzerland dream of putting their name on the list for the first time.
See you on November 30th.
The opening ceremony of the 16th Master’U BNP Paribas will take place on Thursday 30 November, the day before the competition.
The 8 delegations will meet at 18:30 at the Honfleur City Hall.
They will then parade around the port before reaching the Halle des Greniers in Sel, where the traditional speeches and the draw will take place.
